Of mites and men: scabies in patients with kidney disease

چکیده
Introduction In this issue of the journal, Yates et al. [1] describe the interesting case of a 54-year-old renal transplant recipient with enigmatic pruritus. Many diagnostic considerations were entertained and drugs stopped, switched and changed again to the point where even stopping the immunosuppression altogether and sacrificing the graft were considered by the desperate patient. Eventually, scabies was diagnosed and the patient made an uneventful recovery with appropriate treatment. Here, we aim to provide some context for their report and discuss scabies and its relevance in renal patients.

Genomic resources and draft assemblies of the human and porcine varieties of scabies mites, Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis and var. suis
BACKGROUND The scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, is a parasitic arachnid and cause of the infectious skin disease scabies in humans and mange in other animal species. Scabies infections are a major health problem, particularly in remote Indigenous communities in Australia, where secondary group A streptococcal and Staphylococcus aureus infections of scabies sores are thought to drive the high ra...

A 86-year-old fully bedridden woman with dementia and chronic kidney disease presented with extensive, grey-yellowish hyperkeratotic plaques located on the palms, axillae, chest, and face that had occurred 3 months ago (Fig. 1). Moreover, a generalized rash with thickening of the skin and intense pruritus was present. Dematoscopy revealed several dense triangles suspicious for scabies mites hea...
متن کاملAtopy patch test reactivity to house dust mites in patients with scabies.
It is well known that the house dust and the scabies mites are related phylogenetically. We therefore performed atopy patch tests with house dust mite antigens (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Dp) and/or Dermatophagoides farinae (Df)) in scabies patients without atopy and healthy controls. We studied 25 men with active scabies and 25 healthy controls. Skin prick tests with standardized house du...

Objective: Scabies-associated glomerulonephritis (SGN) is often seen in certain populations, but little is known about its incidence, clinical characteristics, prognosis and pathogenesis. Methodology: 376 patients with scabies were enrolled and divided into scabies-alone group (group A) and SGN group (group B) based on the presence or absence of glomerulonephritis. Clinical indicators and vario...

The scabies mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, is an obligate parasite of the skin that infects humans and other animal species, causing scabies, a contagious disease characterized by extreme itching. Scabies infections are a major health problem, particularly in remote Indigenous communities in Australia, where co-infection of epidermal scabies lesions by Group A Streptococci or Staphylococcus aureus is...
